The Ketchikan-Misty Fiord Ranger District, Tongass National Forest is currently recruiting for temporary Forestry Technician (GS-0462-4/GS-0462-5) positions for the 2018 field season. These positions will provide unique opportunities for career development and enhancement with on the job training in the field of forestry while working in one of the most dynamic regions of the United States.


Work assignments include assisting District Foresters with timber sale unit preparation, logging road design, and timber volume estimation. Selected applicants will utilize forest mensuration equipment, GPS technology, and analytical software programs to determine logging systems feasibility, develop unit boundaries, and cruise timber.  Applicants must be physically able to hike through rugged and uneven terrain for extended periods of time and work in prolonged periods of adverse weather conditions common to Southeast Alaska on a daily basis.


During the field season, the timber sale preparation crew often works from various remote field camps and/or floating barge camps with travel to and from the field via boat, float plane or helicopter. The field season typically begins early to mid-April and extend into November (weather permitting). Appointment length and start/end dates are flexible. Work schedules will allow for opportunity to recreate in some of the most incredible country in Southeast Alaska during time off. Housing is available on a first come basis.

Job Description:

Come study at Mt. Cuba Center, a premier botanical garden that embraces ecological gardening and celebrates native plants. The Arboriculture Intern will learn first-hand how Mt. Cuba Center manages our extensive collection of trees. The intern will work in our gardens and natural lands areas on a full range of tree care tasks including planting, pruning, and removals. In addition, the intern will become proficient at using the tools of the trade such as ropes, knots, pole saws, and pruners. Additional arboricultural skills learned in the program include identification of native trees, plant health care, and groundwork.  Advanced training in tree climbing and the operation of a chain saw and brush chipper will also be included in the internship.  The intern will take the lead on a special project to develop a formal process for tree assessment in our gardens. Through inspections, data collection, and prioritization, the intern will learn how to identify and evaluate the maintenance needs of the tree. By assessing safety risks, tree health, tree structure and aesthetic concerns, corrective solutions can be recommended. This internship presents an excellent opportunity for an individual who plans to pursue a career in arboriculture.  Qualifications include attention to detail, self-direction, and the ability to lift 25 pounds.

Job Description:

The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, a multidisciplinary department composed of engineers and scientists, is seeking a suitable candidate to fill a 9-month tenure-track faculty position in biological degradation of bio-based resources and materials with 50% research and 50% teaching responsibilities. Microbial pathways to deconstruct plant tissues have long been studied in a pest management context, particularly in wood durability, but these pathways are increasingly being studied in nature and harnessed for bioconversion of plant biomass. This has diversified the organisms being studied and broadened definitions for bio-based resources and materials. Bio-based resources include wood, agricultural crop residues, and other biomass. Bio-based materials include forest products, bio-based composites, and polymeric lignocellulose derivatives.


Teaching responsibilities will include both undergraduate and graduate courses in bioproducts and biosystems engineering, sustainable systems management, and environmental sciences; including the influence of organisms such as fungi, bacteria, and insects on bio-based products and bioremediation, and industrial and environmental microbiology. Courses will serve a diverse body of students.

The successful candidate will develop a strong, extramurally-funded research program involving fundamentals and applications of microbiology (including bacterial and fungal biology and plant-pathogen interactions) related to the biological degradation or protection of bio-based resources and materials.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Wood Science, Bioproducts and Biosystems, Biochemical or Agricultural Engineering, Mycology, Plant Pathology, Forest Products, or related disciplines with demonstrated experience/background in biological degradation of bio-based resources and materials. Applicants should have a strong publication record in relation to biodegradation of bio-based materials, and evidence of the potential to initiate and sustain a strong extramurally-funded research program. Ph.D. must be obtained by date of appointment.

A proven track record for interacting collaboratively with scientists and engineers across various disciplines. Evidence of innovative approaches to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Postdoctoral experience beyond the PhD. An opening with a two year stipend and tuition waiver is available in the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts, Mississippi State University. The student selected for this position will work toward an M.S. in Sustainable Bioproducts, focusing on the statistical distributions of strength and stiffness properties in mill run lumber populations. The student selected for this position will be responsible for oversight of laboratory work involving, but not limited to, the following:

  • Acquisition of lumber specimens from local/regional sawmills
  • Preparation of specimens for testing (labeling, measuring, planing, weighing, etc.)
  • Laboratory-based nondestructive evaluation of the lumber specimens
  • Performance of static bending tests on an Instron universal testing machine
  • Participation in statistical analyses of the data
  • Preparation/presentation of oral and written reports

In addition to these duties, the selected student will pursue coursework necessary for the completion of an M.S. degree in Sustainable Bioproducts and write/defend a thesis on this project.

In support of this work, the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory have collaborated on funding, which will support one M.S. student for two academic years, including stipend, tuition, and insurance. The student will also maintain an office cubicle at the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts.

A student selected for this position will be under the direction of Dr. Frank Owens (MSU Department of Sustainable Bioproducts). The student will have ample opportunities for interaction with professional research and industry personnel, and when possible, will travel to appropriate meetings to present findings from this research.

A Bachelor’s degree in a related field (forestry/forest products/wood science, engineering, mathematics/statistics, physics, etc.) and a GRE test report are required for application to this program. POSITION SUMMARY:  The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is seeking qualified candidates for a term limited (3-yr minimum), full-time coordinator position overseeing hunting and shooting sports recruitment, retention and reactivation (R3) programs in the state of Indiana.  This position is a cooperative effort between the NWTF and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and will conduct adaptive management for planning, coordinating and collaborating with various partner organizations, training, implementing, monitoring, and performing outreach related to hunting and fishing R3 programming in Indiana.   The position will have statewide duties with a preferred living location in central Indiana.  Essential duties and responsibilities are listed below with other duties being assigned as needed.    


Essential Functions:


  • Develop and implement a State step-down R3 plan based on the Council to Advance Hunting and Shooting Sports National R3 Plan Assess the various gaps that exists in current programs to develop/coordinate clear and measurable pathways for hunting and fishing R3 in Indiana
  • Develop tools for identifying potential participants in hunting and fishing outreach efforts
  • Develop an R3 steering committee to coordinate biannual meetings with all partners to share accomplishments, challenges, modifications, and opportunities to enhance achievable deliverables
  • Work in coordination with existing hunting and fishing R3 staff in Indiana to expand capacity for programs that fill gaps in R3 efforts
  • Help create and implement a program for mentor selection and development
  • Assist partners with assessing their R3 efforts to identify potential gaps in programing and identify sections of the Outdoor Recreation Adoption Model not currently being addressed
  • Assist the NWTF-IN State Chapter with implementing their R3 strategic plan objectives specific to the "Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt." initiative through coordinating / expanding mentored hunts
  • Assist with various programs where applicable, including: NWTF and other partner education/outreach programs, expos, & mentored hunts
  • Coordinate efforts to re-engage lapsed hunters
  • Assess the effectiveness of existing and new R3 programs through participant tracking and surveys
  • Adapt programming and share new information to ensure program success
  • Submit press releases through partner media outlets to publicize the partnership and any R3 programs
  • Develop / edit R3-related programming materials like brochures, booklets, video productions, digital, social media, and/or radio public service announcements
  • Coordinate and assist with hunting, trapping, and shooting sports events
  • Seek out additional funding to support program implementation



  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in an science-related natural resources field, education, or communications
  • Experience in performing above or similar duties
  • An understanding of Indiana conservation organizations, hunting, fishing and shooting sports, and local & national hunting and shooting sports R3 partnership efforts
  • Familiarity / understanding of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation
  • Ability to work irregular schedules including some weekends, evenings and overnight stays
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, self-motivated and able to motivate others
