The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) at Oklahoma State University invites applications for a full‐time, eleven‐month, tenure‐track position (60% research and 40% teaching) at the rank of Assistant Professor in Quantitative Ecology. The research appointment is in the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES) and the teaching appointment is in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). This position reports directly to the department head. Oklahoma State University is a leading land‐grant university in a region represented by an environmental gradient that ranges from pine and oak forests in eastern Oklahoma with >1400 mm of rainfall to shortgrass prairie and pinyon‐juniper rangelands with <450 mm of rainfall in the western panhandle. The NREM department is composed of a diverse group of faculty with expertise in aquatics, fisheries, forestry, rangelands, and wildlife resources, employs 20 faculty and 9 support staff, and also houses the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will develop an active research program in Quantitative Ecology to answer complex questions related to natural resource measurement or management using modeling, statistics, or other mathematical approaches in cooperation with NREM faculty and other natural resource professionals. The individual is expected to develop an independent research program and to participate in collaborative, interdisciplinary research and teaching activities with appropriate departments and OAES faculty. Working relationships with other OSU units and professionals within the region and the nation are strongly encouraged and expected. The successful candidate will teach two undergraduate courses and one graduate level course.

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program concordant with the land grant mission that focuses on the quantitative ecology of natural resources, i.e. forests, rangelands, wildlife and fisheries resources.
  2. Initial teaching responsibilities will address forest and timber measurements involving a blend of theory, practical application, and field‐based experience in the undergraduate forestry program, and a graduate level course in statistical, analytical, and modeling approaches relevant to natural resources management. Additional teaching responsibilities will be based upon department needs and faculty expertise.
  3. . Recruit, mentor, and train graduate students.
  4. Advise and mentor undergraduate students.

Qualifications:

  1. A Ph.D.in natural resources, biostatistics, or closely related field from an accredited university is required. One or more degrees in Forestry at any level is required.
  2. Demonstrated ability and strong interest in instruction and advisement of undergraduate and graduate students.
  3. Demonstrated ability and strong interest in collaborative research with natural resource research scientists and other natural resource professionals to develop and maintain an active research program, to include publishing in leading scientific journals, and demonstrated interest and ability to seek and secure extramural funding to support research.

The South Carolina Waterfowl Association is looking for a Natural Resource Instructor for Camp Leopold, a program designed to immerse students in the outdoors and develop an understanding and appreciation for the natural world. Instructors will teach school groups from all over the state of South Carolina on a 1, 2, or 2.5 day program. The instructor will help prepare the facility for upcoming groups, teach classes ranging from wetland ecosystems to team building, and ensure that teachers and students alike are given an enjoyable, engaging, and enlightening trip.

Housing will be provided at our 587-acre Wildlife Education Center (WEC) in our VIP Cabin, which is less than a mile from Lake Marion and within an hour's drive of both Charleston and Columbia. Meals will be provided when school groups are attending (meals are not provided on weekends or when the facility has not been booked) and there are laundry facilities on site. Candidates may be considered for other employment options within the organization after successfully demonstrating the ability to perform expected duties.

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is seeking qualified candidates for a national forestry initiative coordinator position.  This is a cooperative position between the NWTF and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and will be responsible for administering, implementing and promoting a large-scale forest management technical assistance program on private lands across 23 states.  This is a full-time, term limited (four year minimum) position.  Duty station is to be determined. 

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The primary objective of the national forestry initiative coordinator is to deliver the NWTF’s conservation mission at the National, Regional and State level via the Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. (STH2).  This will be accomplished working in partnership with NRCS while providing oversight, administration, and coordination of 24 foresters across 23 states.  This position will report directly to the NWTF’s Director of Conservation Operations for the Central Region and work collaboratively with NWTF staff to coordinate forestry capacity and programmatic delivery in states within the NRCS Forestry Initiative (NFI). 

DUTIES

·      Conduct and provide administration support for all agreements associated with the NFI and associated foresters

·      Assist with technical writing as needed to support the NWTF and NRCS partnership

·      Promote the NFI through enhanced internal and external communications pursuant to progress and accomplishments; provides required quarterly/annual reports and oral presentations as required

·      Serve the partnership as the coordinator for the NFI, to promote and facilitate consistency in program interpretation, communication, implementation and delivery at the National level

·      Foster collaboration and cooperation amongst all partners engaged in the NFI, but primarily NWTF field staff and NRCS field staff and state, regional, and National staff

·      Oversee the hiring (advertising vacancies, scheduling interviews, onboarding) of NFI foresters through coordination with NWTF staff overseeing NFI states and NFI foresters

·      Coordinate subject matter material and information dissemination as well as job-related training of foresters in cooperation with NWTF staff

·      Provide internal and external insights pursuant to staff accomplishments, performance towards annual Goals & Objectives, etc.

·      Provide effective and regular communication with NRCS State Conservationists and other NRCS Points of Contact involved in the NFI, and NWTF field staff on a monthly basis to assess progress, needs, and significant challenges, etc., as well as any external funding partners

·      Maintain and solicit matching financial contributions from partners, including tracking within the NWTF’s Conservation Reporting Portal, invoicing, etc.

·      Provide updates and news to NWTF’s Communications Department pursuant to the NFI and  conservation delivery within respective states; contribute to Turkey Country magazine, Turkey Call television, NWTF state newsletters, websites, blogs, etc. as requested

·      Other functions as assigned by supervisor

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Preferred candidates will possess experience working in forested ecosystems and knowledge of wild turkeys, forest wildlife and their habitat requirements, to include T&E species; knowledge of forest management and planning, and working with and understanding of the Farm Bill and its programs.  The ability to effectively cooperate with private landowners, the general public, cooperators and peers; skills in communicating both orally and in written form to convey clear, persuasive messages that positively influence the thoughts and actions of others; proficient skills in the use of Microsoft Office applications are required for this position. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·      Bachelor’s degree in natural resources along with at least six (6) years of professional experience, two (2) of which must include program oversight and administration; and/or a Master’s degree with four (4) years of professional experience or equivalent

·      Ability to work independently without close supervision and ability to determine work priorities daily, weekly and monthly to maximize time efficiency is required 

·      Must have good public speaking and presentation skills for both technical and nontechnical audiences, ability to write for both professional & general audiences

·      Basic computer skills such as e-mail and Microsoft Office suite

·      Strong knowledge of forest management and associated research techniques

·      Ability to navigate in remote and rural areas, communicate with land managers and provide advice to agency workers in the field

·      Must be willing to incur moderate travel including overnight stays of three to five nights or more

·      Ability to use & apply GIS technologies

·      Must demonstrate a team attitude, proven leadership skills, excellent organizational skills and an ability to motivate others through a positive attitude

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Department Head’s responsibilities include leadership of a multidisciplinary natural resources program in forestry, wildlife, fisheries, biomass, and wood science. The Head has administrative responsibility for curriculum and academic affairs, research and Extension programs, personnel and facilities, and financial matters of the department. The Head is responsible for developing and maintaining strong working relationships with UTIA administrators and other academic departments, government agencies, industry, and the private sector. Job Overview: Under general supervision, is responsible for professional wildlife management work of average difficulty in the implementation of wildlife management practices in a moderate-sized wildlife area or facility; assists in the implementation of management practices in a large, complex wildlife area or facility; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features: An employee in this class performs a variety of activities associated with the management of wildlife. Work involves wildlife habitat development and maintenance, public relations activities, facilities maintenance, wildlife law enforcement within assigned geographic area(s) and assisting in research data collection. This class differs from that of Wildlife Manager 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for a larger, more complex wildlife area or management responsibilities.

Work Activities:

Guiding, Directing, and Motivating Subordinates:

  1. Adheres to all laws, agency directives, policies, procedures, and protocols to provide an example to assigned subordinates.
