Woody biomass continues to receive significant national attention as a source of renewable energy. There are numerous conferences and seminars about renewable energy and woody biomass utilization. However, very few of the presentations provide actual case studies or a look at the technology first-hand. The Mid-South Forestry Equipment Show provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how woody biomass can be utilized.

The Woody Biomass: Fueling the Future workshop will address several aspects of utilizing woody biomass for the production of renewable energy including:

  • a national overview on the current utilization of wood biomass
  • using GIS and satellite imagery to locate and quantify woody biomass
  • moving woody biomass out of the forest and converting it into forms for delivery to processing facilities
  • using specialized equipment for harvesting forest residue
  • converting woody biomass into chips for co-firing with coal at power plants
  • using a mobile unit for producing energy using woody biomass

Education on woody biomass utilization is a very important part of developing renewable energy. The workshop will provide landowners, county agents, economic developers, and others with educational tools. Continuing education hours are available:

6 hours, category 1 - continuing forestry education
6 hours, category 1 - continuing logger education

Workshop is located 7 miles south of Starkville, Mississippi on Hwy 25 at the Mid-South Forestry Equipment Show Site.
