Job Description: The School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System are seeking applications for a full time, 12-month tenure track Extension Specialist position at the Assistant Professor rank. The successful candidate will develop an extension and outreach program (75%) to educate landowners, natural resource professionals, and other stakeholders in topic areas of applied wildlife management, wildlife damage management, habitat and population management, and/or habitat restoration. The Extension Specialist will be a part of the Forestry, Wildlife, and Natural Resources Extension Team and is expected to work independently and in collaboration with other faculty in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences along with several state, federal, and NGO partners. The successful applicant will synthesize, apply, and disseminate research-based information and expertise to address relevant and timely information needs in one or more of the above areas, develop and deliver educational programs through a variety of media including publications, social media, websites, distance learning, and demonstrations, and secure extramural funding to support Extension programming. The Extension Specialist is expected to provide programmatic leadership, training, and technical support to regional and county extension agents and other Alabama Cooperative Extension System personnel. The candidate will also teach and advise (25%) undergraduate and/or graduate level courses in wildlife ecology and management and engage in some limited applied research relevant to their area of extension programming. This position will be on the Auburn University campus in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. Minimum Qualifications: A PhD in Wildlife Sciences or related field at the time employment begins. The successful candidate must demonstrate a compelling interest and capability to deliver science-based information to a variety of audiences. POSITION SUMMARY:  The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, term limited (minimum of 3 yrs.) coordinator position overseeing hunting and shooting sports recruitment, retention and reactivation (R3) programs in the state of Indiana.  This position is a cooperative effort between the NWTF and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IN DNR).  The coordinator will utilize adaptive management for planning, coordinating and collaborating with various partner organizations, and be primarily responsible for training, , monitoring, and performing outreach related to implementation of  the “Invitation to Conservation” (I2C) program in Indiana.  The position will have statewide responsibilities with a preferred duty station in central Indiana.  Other duties assigned as needed. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. 

 

Essential Functions:

 

·         Develop and implement a State step-down R3 plan based on the Council to Advance Hunting and Shooting Sports National R3 Plan

·         Assess the various gaps that exists in current programs to develop/coordinate clear and measurable pathways for hunting and fishing R3 in Indiana

·         Develop tools for identifying potential participants in conservation outreach efforts

·         Work with R3 steering committee to coordinate biannual meetings with all partners to share accomplishments, challenges, modifications, and opportunities to enhance achievable deliverables

·         Work in coordination with existing INDNR staff/departments to expand capacity for programs that fill gaps in R3 efforts

·         Coordinate I2C marketing & outreach efforts in close collaboration with IN DNR Communications

·         Assist partners with assessing their R3 efforts to identify potential gaps in programing and identify sections of the Outdoor Recreation Adoption Model not currently being addressed 

·         Assist the NWTF-IN State Chapter with implementing the R3 strategic plan objectives within the “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.”  initiative; specifically, coordinating and expanding mentored hunts

·         Assist with various programs where applicable, including: NWTF and other partner education/outreach programs, expos,  and mentored hunts

·         Coordinate efforts to reactivate / reengage lapsed hunters

·         Develop and assess evaluation tools for participant tracking and surveys

·         Adapt programming and share new information to ensure program success

·         Submit press releases through partner media outlets to publicize the partnership and any R3 programs

·         Develop I2C programming materials like brochures, booklets, video productions, digital, social media, and/or radio public service announcements to address R3

·         Coordinate and assist with hunting, trapping, and shooting sports events

·         Seek additional funding to support program implementation and expand delivery

 

Qualifications:

·      Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an science-related natural resources field, education, human dimensions, or communications (Applicants with a Master’s degree are preferred)

·      An understanding of Indiana conservation organizations, hunting, fishing and shooting sports, and local & national hunting and shooting sports R3 partnership efforts

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture (WFA) seeks a dynamic scholar specializing in wildlife-habitat relationships that yield management applications for public and private stakeholders. Some potential fields of interest include, but are not limited to, species-habitat associations, habitat management and restoration, fire ecology, disturbance ecology, forest ecology, and management of working landscapes. In addition to these areas of interest, we encourage applicants to identify opportunities to build on existing departmental expertise and/or expand the department in new directions. The applicant should be a broadly trained wildlife ecologist that can contribute to a diverse faculty group and demonstrate how their research and teaching program will complement and enrich the department.

The primary responsibilities of this position will be the development of a productive, externally-funded, and nationally/internationally recognized research program, effective mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, and teaching within the WFA program. NWTF Forester / Wildlife Biologist - Missouri

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has an immediate need for a full-time, term limited  (minimum of 3 yrs) Forester or Wildlife Biologist to work in the Ozark Highlands of Southern Missouri.  Work will be conducted cooperatively with the USDA Forest Service Mark Twain National Forest, NRCS state and local offices, agency partners, and other NWTF staff to manage and expand projects on the national forest and provide technical assistance to landowners, primarily through the development of conservation plans. Duty Station will be either the Houston or Eminence NRCS office.  

Duties:

·         Collaborate with Forest Service on the development of Stewardship proposals focusing on the restoration of natural communities and wildlife habitats.

·         Develop, administer, implement, and monitor NWTF/Mark Twain National Forest Stewardship Agreements and contracts in cooperation with Mark Twain National Forest staff.

·         Identify opportunities and provide management recommendations for wildlife habitat improvement projects for game and non-game species to be included as service work items on Stewardship agreements and contracts. 

·         Manage subcontractors to implement forest management, timber stand improvement, non-native invasive removal, enhancing openings, and other habitat management activities.

·         Seek additional grant funding, develop partnerships, and work with volunteers to expand conservation activities on National Forest System lands.

·         Construct update reports, manage data, and provide oversight for all contract administration.

·         Provide private landowner conservation technical assistance with a priority focus in Howell, Oregon, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties.

·         Collaborate with Forest Service and NRSC on development of existing and future Joint Chiefs Proposals and future landscape level restoration projects.

·         Assist District Conservationists in providing technical assistance to landowners expressing an interest in forest and wildlife management as related to NRCS Farm Bill Programs, including site visits, resource inventories, and Customer Service Toolkit Plan development.

·         Provide forestry and wildlife support to NRCS for implementation, checkout, and certification of planned activities utilizing conservation practices standards, specifications, and job sheets.

·         Develop Forest Management Plans that meet NRCS criteria using Conservation Desktop.

·         Promote participation and highlight accomplishments by submitting newspaper articles to all local newspapers within the project area and providing radio interviews on identified radio stations.

  • Develop and deliver innovative forest management techniques to landowners and cooperators through workshops, written materials, field days and educational programs.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Preferred candidates will possess experience working in forest ecosystems, riparian communities and a working knowledge of wild turkeys, forest wildlife and their habitat requirements.  Knowledge of forest entomology, pathology, fire behavior, forest management and planning for major silvicultural types of the region is required.  A working knowledge of basic surveying principles, map reading and GIS/GPS technology, ArcGIS skills and the ability to apply professional scientific techniques to the land for which responsibilities are assigned is required.  The forester will possess the ability to effectively cooperate with private landowners, the general public, cooperators and their peers.  The position requires the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form, to convey clear and persuasive messages that positively influence the thoughts and actions of others.  Knowledge of USDA Farm Bill conservation programs (e.g., EQIP, CSP, CRP).

 

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry from a SAF accredited program or a

degree in wildlife biology / mgmt. or natural resources related field (Master’s degree preferred).   Experience with forestry and silviculture, conservation implementation, habitat management, and wildlife biology is preferred. 

·         Strong organizational skills, networking, communication(ex., verbal, presentation, inter-personal, writing), project management, and leadership ability is preferred

·         Experience working with private landowners as well as Federal / State agencies (ex. NRCS, MDC, USFS) with working knowledge of cost-share programs, such as EQIP(NRCS)

Job Description:

The Southern Region of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) is seeking an experienced biologist to join our South Atlantic Conservation Team. We seek a highly-motivated, self-starting, collaborative individual to work as a key member of a team of biologists, engineers and land protection professionals that are based out of Hanahan, South Carolina. The successful applicant will assist with implementing conservation projects on private and public lands and will have a primary focus on implementing and increasing project delivery in Florida. The responsibility of the position will primarily be the protection, enhancement and restoration of wetlands and associated habitats important to waterfowl and other wetland dependent wildlife species.

This position location will be determined based on the candidate selection.  The position will report to the Director of Conservation Programs in the DU South Atlantic Office in Hanahan, South Carolina.

Required Education:

Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural resources field; an advanced degree is desired.

Required Experience:

Applicants must have at least five years of relevant experience and have a strong knowledge of biological principles and practices. Field experience with waterfowl and other wetland dependent birds, as well as wetland ecology and management (moist-soil, coastal marsh, forested wetlands) is a primary consideration for this position. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Proven proposal/grant writing skills and project management capabilities are necessary. Familiarity with the region's biological resources, local and regional environmental issues, and private and public stakeholders is beneficial. Applicants should be knowledgeable about state and federal wetland conservation programs, policies, and laws/regulations. Examples include (but are not limited to) the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, National Coastal Wetlands Grants, Restore Act, National Environmental Policy Act, National Historic Preservation Act and Clean Water Act.

Skills:

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter adept at identifying opportunities focused on enhancement, restoration, acquisition and protection of wetlands and associated habitats to fulfill DU's conservation objectives within the South Atlantic. The incumbent biologist will be responsible for project development and management. Project development duties include identifying potential projects, developing/maintaining relationships with public and private partners, and obtaining funding from a wide variety of sources for project work. This also includes writing and submitting proposals to various agencies, foundations and other funding sources to secure project funds. Project management responsibilities include development of agreements, project accounting, planning, permitting, implementation and reporting in collaboration and coordination with agency partners and other stakeholder groups, DU biological and engineering staff, consultants and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and on-budget delivery of projects. He/she must also assist with fundraising and outreach events, represent DU at wetland conservation venues, and help with other conservation activities. He/she would be required to establish and maintain relationships with key DU volunteers and fundraising staff and provide DU management with timely communication on project work/issues. Finally, he/she would assist communication staff with developing information to educate and promote DU's wetland conservation efforts. Working hours for this position is a balance of office and field work and the approximate allocation of time is dependent on scheduling, seasonal priorities and other factors.
