Responsible for evaluating and improving plant performance in the areas of safety, quality, production output and operating cost. This is a hands-on position that involves performing research, conducting experiments and gathering data in a plant environment while leading action teams to drive results. There is opportunity to study current production processes, recommend improvements utilizing the Boise Improvement Cycle and gain exposure to multiple departments. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Wood Products, Forestry, Business, Engineering or related field required. Preferred Qualifications: Prefer degree in STEM related field and between 0-4 years of experience in related job function. The successful candidate will possess the ability to understand and apply mathematical calculations and concepts, computer skills in many types of applications and able to communicate effectively at all levels. The ideal candidate will be comfortable in a plant environment, working with diverse teams and able to work a flexible schedule. This position is a full time opportunity working for a family owned and operated flooring and cabinet moulding manufacturer. The main responsibility of this role is to oversee the drying of lumber in a kiln, measuring and tracking the moisture content and overseeing the drying schedule operations.

Kiln Operator Responsibilities:

  • Determines fluent drying cycle and kiln schedule while making routine adjustments to achieve proficient operations.
  • Weigh lumber samples periodically during drying process and readjusts temperature and humidity controls to regulate moisture reduction rate and avoid damage to lumber.
  • Measures moisture content of lumber at completion of drying cycle, using moisture meter, to ensure that specified amount of moisture has been removed.
  • Control quality of drying utilizing kiln samples and adjust drying rates to ensure lumber exceeds quality standards, as we always strive to exceed industry grades.
  • Manages Brunner-Hildebrand track and package kilns to dry lumber to specified moisture content

Job Description:

The position is responsible for assisting in the preparation of annual harvest plans and for managing the execution of harvest, silviculture and inventory activities. Evaluates and manages harvest plan to balance short and long term impacts to financial goals, future harvest levels, harvest capacity and customer commitments. Responsible for managing contractors that will perform the majority of the harvesting, silviculture, inventory and property management activities. Responsibilities include contract preparation, administration and performance monitoring to ensure contract compliance.  The position requires a complete working knowledge of SFI certification requirements, state Best Management Practices (BMPs) and local ordinances regarding commercial timber harvest and transportation. 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)
  • Assure a safe workplace. Take personal initiative and responsibility to ensure ongoing safe behaviors through implementation and active participation in the company safety program. 
  • Provide the design and updates necessary to continually maintain an accurate and current harvest plan. Provide accurate planning information to other departments regarding weekly and monthly wood flows, log sales and revenue projections.  
  • Manage contract logging and road building/maintenance program. Provide indirect oversight of contracted work.  Perform timely field checks to ensure contract and harvest plan compliance.
  • Responsible for property maintenance including property line surveying and marking, maintenance of gates and monitoring encroachment within the region.
  • Monitor hunting club field activities to ensure compliance with the terms of the recreation lease agreement.
  • Apply consistent and accurate application and communication of policies and procedures designed to promote efficiency and productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with SFI policies and procedures, state Best Management Practices and local ordinances regarding timber harvesting and hauling
  • Utilize communication and negotiation skills when interaction with members of the community is required.
  • Manage and support development of direct reports in order to maximize value in hiring, retention, and succession and goal attainment.
  • Manage the layout of harvest settings and haul roads to ensure productivity with the least environmental impact, maintaining compliance with all state and federal regulations. 
  • Manage harvest operations. Minimize moves, maximize capacity efficiency, and provide accurate production information and log sales forecasts. Manage sequence changes to assure customer volume and log quality commitments are met.
  • Budget for and manage site preparation, planting and other silviculture activities, utilizing the appropriate financial analysis and logistics applications.
  • Assist in the margin analysis of harvest and silviculture activities.
  • Perform productive performance management reviews (written and verbal), according to program.
  • Represent the Company at public meetings and community events, as required.

Required Education:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forest Management, Natural Resource Management, or equivalent, plus ten or more years of experience. If incumbent does not have B.S. degree relevant industry, supervisory and contractor management experience will be considered.
