The position is 75% extension/outreach, 20% teaching, and 5% service subject to annual evaluation and modification. The successful candidate will be expected to lead state, regional/national forest products utilization efforts, providing expertise and knowledge in critical issues facing the hardwood industry. The successful candidate will evaluate forest industry needs and develop appropriate priorities, strategies and solutions including effective Cooperative Extension Service programs, scholarly resources, extramural funding acquisition, contribution to and/or conduct applied research. This will be accomplished while building, maintaining, and leading effective partnerships with aligned industries, agencies, and organizations such as the Ohio Valley Lumber Drying Association, Kentucky Forest Industries Association, and James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits.

The University promotes an interdisciplinary environment with faculty, staff, and professionals within the department and Cooperative Extension Service and the successful candidate will be required to build both internal and external collaborative efforts to address forest product utilization issues affecting the general public and technical issues impacting individual businesses or industry sectors. Knowledge of wood science fundamentals and industrial operations will facilitate problem-solving. Instructional responsibilities will also include undergraduate instruction associated with the department’s accredited B.S. program, examples include Forest Products, Wood Science, Forest Operations and Utilization. The position is also expected to support the Department’s graduate programs, including the recently implemented doctoral program, and aligned certificate programs (ex. Distillation, Wine and Brewing Studies). This position is one of four faculty hires undertaken by the department this academic year providing a unique opportunity to collaboratively strengthen the department’s long-term effort to enhance the ecological, economic, and social benefits of forests and related natural resources.

  11. Assist with the review and processing of CFR scholarships.
  12. Coordinate yearly updates of the CFR Undergraduate Student Handbook.
  13. Assist during registration and orientation periods.
  14. Manage classroom and events calendar for Office of Student Services
  15. Assist as requested with CFR functions and events – including, but not limited to, Welcome Back BBQ, Homecoming, Awards Banquet, Graduation Reception, Super Bulldog Weekend, and alumni events.
  16. Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Undergraduate degree in Natural Resources or related field.
  • Is expected to enroll in a MSU graduate degree program, preferably within the College of Forest Resources

Program Details
The purpose of the Green Diamond Opportunity Internship Program is to expand and enrich Green Diamond by supporting outstanding students from various cultural, ethnic, and socio­economic backgrounds, with diverse talents, interests, and life experiences whose educational pursuits align with our business.  The Opportunity Program is intended for students who are currently pursuing academic degrees in an accredited college of forestry or natural resources and to help them achieve their academic goals.

Internship
Priority will be given to applicants who have completed at least one school year at a university or college with a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited forestry program prior to the commencement of the internship.  Preferred fields of study include forestry, fisheries, wildlife biology, etc.  Successful candidates will be selected for a paid internship lasting up to 12-weeks.
Scholarship
In order to qualify for the scholarship, interns must be enrolled in a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited forestry program for the following school year.  Interns will be required to submit a secondary application near the end of the internship to be considered for the scholarship.  If awarded, the scholarship will be up to $3,000.
Location & Housing
This internship is located in Meridian, MS or Athens, GA. Housing or a stipend towards housing may be available for interns out of the area. 
Timing

Position Purpose:
To expose candidates to a wide variety of functions within the Company, to include timber cruising, forest engineering, sales, timberland services, forestry, and operations. Designed to provide an opportunity to gain an understanding of the processes and roles within Green Diamond.
   
Essential Functions:
Under the guidance of the department leader, the incumbent supports a wide variety of tasks. Duties may include:
  • Participate in forest management activities, including working with contractors who conduct harvest and silviculture activities across the area.
  • Help assess units, layout boundaries and conduct surveys.
  • Flagging boundaries, stream protection zones, property lines, wildlife retention areas, tree marking, and stream classification.
  • Assist with site prep program. 
  • Conduct stocking surveys.
  • Use GIS and other data collection systems for harvest and inventory activities.

Skills:


  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.

  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:


  • This position is located in Meridian, MS or Athens, GA.

  • Works primarily (90%+) of the time in the field under varying topography and climatic extremes.

  • Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in in sometimes harsh weather conditions for long periods of time.

  • Must have the ability to see distance and detail with accuracy.

  • Must have ability to work independently and without immediate supervision in remote areas.

  • Works in conditions that may expose employee wildlife encounters, poison oak and/or insect bites.

  • Mandatory travel to remote company locations.

  • Ability to tour logging operations, attend training and company functions.

  • Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.

  • Stipend:
