Thompson Hall

Thompson Hall is an 84,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility serving as the primary building for the College of Forest Resources (CFR). Completed in 1993, it houses classrooms, laboratories, offices, the Dean’s Office, the Department of Forestry, and the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture.

Sustainable Bioproducts Complex

Dedicated to the research and advancement of sustainable bioproducts, the Sustainable Bioproducts Complex is composed of almost 20 buildings and houses the R.T. Clapp Forest Products Laboratory, the Franklin Center, and various testing laboratories focusing on efforts to add value to timber resources in Mississippi and beyond.

Franklin Center

Home to teaching, office, and laboratory space, the Franklin Center is a 35,000 square-foot building used for target specific research. Sponsors from around the state, nation, and globe frequent the complex as they seek to bring their products to market and add value to wood and fiber-based products.

RT Clapp Forest Products Laboratory

The R.T. Clapp Forest Products Laboratory comprises laboratories, office buildings, and other special-purpose buildings totaling over 90,000 square feet. It houses analytical and testing equipment, pilot plants, and support facilities required for comprehensive research programs involving wood and wood products.

Testing Laboratories

Located within the Sustainable Bioproducts Complex, various research laboratories study wood properties, product development, and environmental impact assessments. Laboratories support research in areas such as lumber testing, engineered wood manufacturing and evaluation, wood durability and protection, biofuels, wood anatomy and identification, furniture design, wood chemistry, adhesives, and other related studies.

Forest and Wildlife Research and Educational Facility

Supporting hands-on learning, research, and outreach, this facility includes a 3,125 square foot outdoor aviary, the 11-acre Johnie R. Dawkins Memorial Deer Unit, forestry greenhouses, natural areas for forestry research, and more.

Deer Pens

The Deer Lab consists of five pens, seven small holding pens, and a handling area. Set to expand, the Deer Lab will offer educational facilities, from a conference center and outdoor classroom to a youth interaction and conservation pen.

Aviary Science Cneter

Aviary

The Avian Science Center has a laboratory for specialized avian physiology and endocrinology research, office space, and 14 experimental facilities rooms- 10 of which are open-aired and netted so birds can be exposed to natural elements and 4 of which are closed to manipulate environmental conditions.

National Training Academy

Headquartered at MSU in the Center for Resolving Human-Wildlife Conflicts, the NTA is the nation’s first academy dedicated to training in resolving human-wildlife conflicts, providing instruction to USDA Wildlife Services personnel.

Greenhouse

With over 4,000 square feet and 3 greenhouse bays featuring automatic and programmable controls for temperature, light and watering, each bay of the Forestry Greenhouse has a wet wall, exhaust fans, heaters, grow lights, sliding tables, and a retractable shade cloth. Two of the bays have an open-roof system to quickly evacuate heat. To complete the facility, an outside irrigation area, headhouse for mixing and storing planting media, and laboratories near the greenhouses are present.

Spanning approximately 8,300 acres, the John W. Starr Memorial Forest is conveniently located close to campus and borders the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge and serves as a living laboratory for demonstration and research in forestry and wildlife management.

Wolf River


Established through the acquisition of over 14,000 acres along the Wolf River in Harrison County, the Wolf River Coastal Forest Research and Education Center serves as a coastal forest research station and demonstration site for longleaf pine restoration. This property protects over 100 miles of riparian buffers along the banks of the Wolf River and its tributaries.

Encompassing 30,000 acres across 28 properties throughout Mississippi, the Bulldog Forest serves as outdoor laboratories for FWRC research and demonstration, and CFR teaching space.
