Local student on award-winning Mississippi State team

Mississippi State University's student chapter brought home honors from the national Wildlife Society's recent annual conference in Nashville.

The four-person MSU team captured second place in the national quiz bowl at the conference. The University of Minnesota placed first and Arkansas Tech came in third in the 16-university competition.

Students were asked questions prepared by academic professors and professionals on topics including wildlife and fisheries management, wildlife and fisheries biology and forestry.

The Wildlife Society, founded in 1937, is the scientific and educational organization serving professionals in wildlife management and natural resources conservation. The organization has 9,000 active members and 78 student chapters.

Mississippi State's chapter was established in 1971 and currently includes 60 students in the College of Forest Resources. Quiz bowl participants were (by hometown):

  • HIGHLAND, Calif.-Graduate student Jim Asmus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Asmus and a 1987 graduate of San Gorgonia High School.
  • MERIDIAN-Senior Scott Edwards, son of Rev. and Mrs. Wayne Edwards and a 1997 graduate of Meridian High School.
  • MORTON-Senior Nicholas Winstead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kendell Winstead and a 1997 graduate of Morton High School.
  • STARKVILLE-Senior Christopher Latch (no additional information available).
