A Mississippi State doctoral student in forest resources is being honored by the Alabama-Mississippi Section of the American Water Works Association.

Austin R. Omer of Starkville received a $2,000 scholarship during the organization's recent annual conference in Point Clear, Alabama. A former Illinois resident, he is pursuing an academic concentration in wildlife and fisheries at the university.

The scholarships are awarded to Alabama and Mississippi residents preparing for water-works industry careers, whether pursuing advanced licensure or training in the water works science field or completing undergraduate or graduate degrees at an institution of higher learning.

The Alabama-Mississippi Section includes some 1,000 members representing utilities, sales and engineering firms, service providers and academia. Internationally, the American Water Works Association has more than 54,000 members.
