George M. Hopper has been voted president-elect of the National Association of University Forest Resources Programs.
Hopper, the dean of Mississippi State University's College of Forest Resources and director of the Forest and Wildlife Research Center, will serve as president of the association for a two-year term beginning January 2007.
A Vicksburg native, Hopper earned bachelor's and master's degrees from MSU and holds a doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is a Fellow in the Society of American Foresters and a specialist in hardwood silviculture and the biology of oaks.
MSU's College of Forest Resources includes the departments of forestry, forest products, wildlife and fisheries, and the Institute of Furniture Manufacturing and Management.
The National Association of University Forest Resources Programs, formerly the National Association of Professional Forestry Schools and Colleges, was formed in 1981 to advance the science, practice and art of forest resource management through the support of forest resource education, research, extension and international programs at the university level. Its membership includes university faculty members, scientists and extension specialists.
The association; led by deans, directors, and heads, represents 67 member universities in their collective dealings with governmental entities, forestry and other natural resource organizations, forestry industry groups, educational and scientific organizations and the public.
