The Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University, under the College of Forest Resources (CFR), recently recognized its exceptional students at the annual spring Student Awards Ceremony. This department is unique in the state, focusing on educating and cultivating future leaders in wildlife and fisheries management.

Graduates from the department go on to vital roles in private companies, nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, and educational institutions, promoting and practicing responsible stewardship and management of natural resources. Graduates can also achieve certifications from The Wildlife Society, American Fisheries Society, or Ecological Society of America.

The following students were honored at the event:

  • Leslie Azwell, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture undergraduate student from Maryland Heights, MO, received the Senior Academic Achievement Award and the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award.
  • Caitlyn Guthrie, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture undergraduate student from Crestview, FL, received the Sophomore Academic Achievement Award.
  • Catherine Paul, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture undergraduate student from Southaven, MS, received the George Hopper Research Excellence Award.
  • Luke Resop, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture master's student from Orrtanna, PA, received the Gluesing Outstanding Graduate Student Award at the Master's Level.
  • Emma Davenport, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture undergraduate student from Chelsea, AL, received the Senior Academic Achievement Award.
  • Jonathan Smith, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture master's student from Brookhaven, MS, received the Scott Veum Jr. Memorial Award.
  • Emma Schultz, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture doctoral student from Starkville, MS, received the David Nabi Memorial Award and the Gluesing Outstanding Graduate Award at the Ph.D. Level.
  • Kevin Kosewick, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture undergraduate student from Collierville, TN, received the Senior Academic Achievement Award.

The department celebrates the high rate of employment across the U.S. and in Mississippi for CFR graduates, which underlines the quality of education and training provided by the university.
